A Voice for People with Disabilities

Q. Is there a voice for disabled people in Sri Lanka?

To provide examples of the level of exclusion of people with disabilities in Sri Lankan society, government sources suggest that only around 6% of people with disabilities have ever attended arts, culture or popular entertainment and 14% have ever taken part in sports. 33% never go out with the rest of family and 33% have never been to a wedding (an important community occasion in Sri Lanka), nor have they taken part in community activities and festivals.

A range of NGOs in Sri Lanka are calling for more power in civil society for disabled people, but we have a long way to go before representation by people with disabilities is common practice in government and civil society.

Along with other NGOs we are striving to establish community-level Disabled People's Organisations to empower disabled people to achieve this level of recognition.
